Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to contest specific calls from the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
